Basic Excel - Formatting the Time

Formatting the time is similar to formatting the date.



1.Select the cell you want to type the time in


2. Go to the numbers group



3. Click on the down arrow next to general numbers


4.Click on More Number Formats


5.  In numbers under catagory click on time. There is an am and pm option and a 24 hour option as well.

1. Click on the cell that you want to put the date in



2.Go to the Number Format Group



3.Click on the down arrow located next to general.


 


4.Click on Long Date



5. Start typing the date in the cell



6.Click outside the cell. The format of the date has changed. You can see in the equations bar what you originally typed.   

Pre-setting the Date

 
 

1. Hold down the left mouse button and drag to highlight multiple cells.



2.Go to the Number Format Group



3.Click on the down arrow located next to general.


 


4.Click on Long Date. The cells highlighted in step 1 are now pre-set to the long date format. each time that you type a shorthand date it will appear as a long date.



To view more options click on the general down arrow and click on more number formats.

 
Under the list of categories select date. There is a list of possible choices under type. Click on the one you want and then click ok.

Basic Excel - Auto Fill

Auto fill is when Excel automatically fills selected cells with data





1. Type Apple into cell A1
 
 
 
2. Move the mouse curser to the right hand corner of the cell. The curser will change from a chunky white cross to a thin black cross



3. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the cell down. Apples will appear in a white box as you are dragging the cell down.



4. Once you reach the bottom of cell B2 release the left mouse button. Apples will now be in both cell A1 and A2

Data Entry


Data is stored in cells in a spreadsheet. Generally, each cell holds a single item of data.
In addition to being stored in the spreadsheet, the data can be used in calculations, displayed in graphs, or sorted and filtered to find specific information.
The two types of data most commonly used in spreadsheet programs are text and numbers.

How to Enter Data

 
 


There are two ways to enter data.  
 
 
1. Left Double click on the cell you want to type the data in. The curser will appear that cell. then start typing.

1. Left Click once in the cell you want the data in
 
 
2. Left Click once in the formula bar
 
 
 
This is what it should now look like. Cell B2 is selected and the curser is in the formula bar.  
 
 
 
3. You can now start typing data into the formula bar
